New Inn Fire Station

Replacing a 1950s station with a low carbon base for Pontypool

About the project

South Wales Fire and Rescue Service is rebuilding its New Inn station in Pontypool. The current building dates from 1952 and no longer meets the needs of a modern fire service, so a new station will be built on the same plot.

Low carbon performance sits at the centre of the brief. The target is a Net Zero Carbon energy rating, with roof-mounted solar panels, and the scheme is intended to set the standard for future stations across the service’s estate.

The site will have 23 car parking spaces, including three accessible bays and five EV chargers. A steel frame training tower replaces the old brick drill tower, and new planting, a hedgerow, a staff well-being garden and bat and bird boxes will improve the site for wildlife.

To keep Pontypool covered during the works, crews will operate from a temporary station nearby.
